Bedding used to establish new record
Published: 24 September 2009
Bedding has been harnessed to set a new world record at the BBC, with Blue Peter shunning bed linen in favour of just mattresses to set the bar for a bed-based domino rally.
Blue Peter continues to make the headlines after 50 years of being in the trade, smashing a world record after 100 people got a little bit closer to their bedding than usual. At the White City location of BBC Television Centre in London, the children's TV stalwart invited adjudicators from the Guinness Book of Records to oversee their mattress domino rally.
Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton was joined by BBC News presenter Tim Willcox and weather girl Laura Tobin to help the bedding stunt succeed, with a circle of mattresses starting in the courtyard of Wood Lane, spinning round the fountain before going through the front door of the centre.
The previous record, set by Bensons for Beds earlier this summer, was destroyed by the 100-strong effort, as the firm was only able to include 41 mattresses - even though their shot at the world record was impressive in itself.
Blue Peter will be celebrating its 51st birthday next year, with the first ever series starting in October 1958. Konnie Huq and Peter Purves are the longest-serving presenters in the show's history.
