Cigarette sparks bed linen and evacuation
Published: 04 September 2009
Bed linen at a hospital in Orlando caught fire after a hapless patient decided, in their infinite wisdom, to light a cigarette in the early hours - a light which eventually spread to her bedding.
The only bright spark involved in a recent Floridian incident was that from the lighter a hospital patient recently used.In a moment which ultimately lacked clarity, a temporary inhabitant at Florida Hospital East decided to light a cigarette while on a ward's bed at 01:30 EST sometime this week, sending the entire facility to their battle stations and deal with the threat, which set fire to the smoker's bed linen.
The lady guilty of smoking burned her hand in the process, though this was the only injury, aside from the bedding that was only meant to keep her warm.
Speaking to NBC, Orange County Fire Department Battalion Chief Doug Brown said: "The hospital staff was prepared for it. They all did a great job on their evacuation.
"Everyone knew what they had to do, and everything ran real smooth."
Bedding nearly set ablaze in Wanganui this month when a lightning bolt tore through a home in the town, with the Wanganui Chronicle revealing how the bedside lamps were blown clean from their bases, sending sparks out across the homeowners' bed.
