Parents must put kids to bed 'for future health'
Published: 15 September 2009
Many parents give their children a lot of freedom before bedtime and sometimes allow them to go to bed when they like, though many must get under their bed linen for the good of their health, an expert asserts.
The healthy development of children can only be achieved if they get to bed early and get a solid night of sleep with their bedding, it has been asserted. In a range of interviews with health experts, CNN concluded that a solid timetable regarding when children get involved with their bed linen is necessary, otherwise they could have behavioural problems or struggle to focus on learning when at school this autumn and winter.
"Sleep patterns and sleep routines matter because they have both long-term and short-term implications for health and cognitive development," said Lauren Hale, assistant professor of preventive medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center in New York.
She added: "If it sets a pattern in the way you treat sleep or bed times, these patterns may last your whole life unknowingly."
According to leading medical resource for children KidsHealth, most children between five and 12 years old must have ten to 11 hours of sleep each night.
