Sleeping well depends on more than bed linen - it's food too
Published: 17 September 2009
Many people think the best way to a good night's sleep is with a memory foam mattress and high-end bed linen such as Egyptian cotton. However, avoiding certain foods will help a lot, too, according to one health expert.
There may be more to getting a good night's sleep on an evening than simply dressing the mattress with top-quality bed linen such as Egyptian cotton, one expert has said.Caring.com's Melanie Haiken told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that food intake before getting some shut-eye is a major issue, stating that chocolate can be problematic in terms of sleeping well under the duvet cover as caffeine in the beans can keep people awake.
Chocolate also contains tyrosine, an amino acid which stimulates the brain, much like preserved and smoked meats, which were criticised on much the same grounds.
Pizza, chilli and tomato sauce are acidic and can cause heartburn and acid reflux, highlighting indigestion as a major issue to avoid by Ms Haiken.
Of course, energy drinks such as Red Bull should be off the cards, she added.
According to Insomniacs UK, foods high in melatonin can help induce sleep, such as chicken, eggs, tuna, seeds and milk.
