Exercise - the cure to insomnia?
Published: 16 September 2010
Insomnia sufferers may find that exercise is the answer to their problems.
Scientists in the US believe they have found a cure for insomnia that does not involve a strict medication regime.Simply engaging in aerobic exercise could have a positive impact on those who struggle to doze off under their duvet quilt at night, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine revealed.
This is particularly the case in those over the age of 55, the researchers found, as the subjects who were physically active showed signs of improved rest at night.
People who had been to a cookery class or museum lecture, on the other hand, were found to have shorter and more disturbed sleep patterns.
One of the scientists involved, Dr Phyllis Zee, said: "This is relevant to a huge portion of the population.
"Insomnia increases with age. Around middle age, sleep begins to change dramatically. It is essential that we identify behavioural ways to improve sleep."
US scientists recently claimed that children who have fewer than the recommended ten hours of sleep a night are prone to becoming obese.
