Bed bugs are becoming an increasing problem around the world with many more people now finding the creatures in their duvets and bed linen, it has been said.
There could be a bed bug pandemic close, Missy Henriksen, vice-president of public affairs at the United States National Pest Management Association, told the BBC.Her comments came after a survey of a thousand pest control firms revealed the increasing incidence of finding the mites within bedding.
Previous studies by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have also shown a growth in the bed bug problem, finding that between 2000 and 2006 calls concerning them increased by an average of 28.5 per cent a year.
“For years people have belittled the problem of bed bugs but now they're beginning to understand this is serious,” said Mike Potter, professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky.
The news provider pointed out that bed bugs could have become resistant to insecticides and so are more difficult to get rid of.
To keep them at bay all bed linen should be thoroughly washed regularly and beds aired throughout the day.
