Resting 'second-best to sleeping'
Published: 21 September 2010
People who struggle to sleep are advised to rest frequently throughout the day.
Resting periodically throughout the day is almost as effective as sleeping, a researcher has found.US sleep specialist Dr Matthew Edlund revealed to the Daily Mail that as some people cannot sleep under the duvet cover, resting can have similar restorative impacts on an individual.
He commented: "Many of us are so busy we see rest as a weakness - a waste of precious time but rest is, in fact, a biological need.
"All the science shows we need rest to live, just like we need food."
Dr Edlund advised against passive rest, such as falling asleep in front of the TV, and instead suggested that active rest can make an individual more alert and effective.
This involves taking deep breaths and encouraging the body to wind down, the expert explained.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Clint Eastwood emphasised the value of sleep by telling his fellow director Angelina Jolie that it is the secret to a successful career behind the camera.
