Sleep - the key to good mental health?
Published: 01 September 2010
Good mental health in kids is down to them sleeping well, a study has found.
Australian scientists have put forward a good case for getting children to bed early, claiming that fewer than five hours sleep could have a negative impact on their mental health. Those who slept for short periods of time were found to be three times more likely to suffer from major difficulties in later life than those who rested for eight hours or more.
Study author Professor Nick Glozier explained: "'What we are seeing is young adults who tend to start off with anxiety and body clock problems, move on to problems like bipolar or major depression."
Professor Glozier, a psychology professor at the University of Sydney, emphasised that even what may be perceived as insignificant problems such as disturbed sleep need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
Michael Grandner, a sleep researcher at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology, identified earlier this week that certain foods will not encourage people to sleep better.
