Soy âcould help women sleepâ
Published: 07 September 2010
Postmenopausal women who find it difficult to drop off under their bed spreads may benefit from drinking soy milk or eating other soy products, it has been claimed.
Oestrogen-like compounds in soy called isoflavones have been shown to help postmenopausal women get a good night’s sleep, Reuters reported.Dr Helena Hachul of the Universidade Federal de Sao Paolo and her team said in the journal Menopause that their research showed that women given isoflavone hormone therapy had improved sleep efficiency and spent more time dozing.
Furthermore, after four months the number who reported moderate or intense insomnia dropped more than in the control group.
The scientists concluded that “phytoestrogen treatment should be considered an option to improve patients' quality of life”.
Soy is also being used in research on the menopause, cancer prevention, osteoporosis and heart disease because of the compounds it contains.
