Technology 'disrupts teenage sleep'
Published: 03 September 2010
Many teenagers struggle to sleep because technology distracts them.
There is a growing trend of teenagers not being able to sleep, which is possibly down to their exposure to technology. With many devices kept in their bedrooms, it is all too easy to turn the TV on or surf the internet instead of getting some shut-eye, noted Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for The Sleep Council.
"It's going to get worse before it gets better and we have to renew our efforts to remind people how important it is not to let sleep suffer," she explained.
Ms Alexander emphasised that there is growing evidence on the link between sleep and technology, so parents need to make sure they are playing their part in getting kids to bed.
Research by the Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University, published in the journal Sleep, shows people who regularly sleep for fewer than five hours are at risk of cardiovascular problems.
